hplovecraftmuseum:

An amusing drawing by Lovecraft himself shopping for clothes. He depicts himself clothed in long hair and beard, but is otherwise naked! At one point while living in NYC Lovecraft was robbed by some local disreputables. After having several suits stolen he was embittered about life in New York to the breaking point. In the letter this cartoon appears (written May 28, 1925), HPL refers to his aunt as “My dear daughter Lillian”. Lovecraft projected the fantasy that he was a very old man, and older than EVERYBODY else (CAS excluded) since he was virtually a teenager! This playful gesture annoyed several persons among his friends and family. It seems that no matter how well we THINK we understand Lovecraft there is always some element of uncertainty in nearly any statement he makes - is he kidding or really half crazy! (Exhibit 264)
